Production tracking app: what does a small manufacturer actually need?
There are programs on the market with hundreds of features. A workshop of ten or fifty people needs fewer features, but they have to work every day without friction.
Start from the questions you ask every day
Where is this job? Who is working on it? Will we make the deadline? If answering these questions means walking the shop floor, making a phone call or searching through Excel sheets, a production tracking app should solve exactly that first. The feature list matters less than whether you can see the status of every order at any moment, from a computer or a phone.
Five things you cannot do without
First, a work order that follows the job from the customer's purchase order to the delivery note. Second, operations on the order, so you know which stage is done and which is waiting. Third, drawings and documents attached to the order, so nobody works from an old revision. Fourth, deadlines and a plan that show what is late before the customer calls. Fifth, work records per operation, so you know how long the job really took. Everything else is an extra you add once these five have become a daily habit.
What to check before you choose
Ask how long setup takes and who does it. Ask whether the software runs on phones and tablets without installation, because the shop floor rarely sits at a computer. Check whether you can import your existing products and customers, or whether everything has to be typed in again. Look for a clear monthly price and a trial period with your own data, not just a presentation. Ask where the data is stored and who can access it.
What is usually too much at the start
Complex modules for purchasing, accounting or machine connectivity make sense in large factories. In a small workshop they often go unused, while they slow down setup and raise the subscription price. It is better to start with orders, planning and work records, and add materials, machines or analytics when a real need appears.
How this looks in NormaX
