What is MES and does your workshop need one?

NormaX · · 5 min read

MES is often mentioned as the answer to production tracking. Before you ask for a quote, it helps to know what it actually does and how much of it a business your size needs.

What MES is

MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is software that connects the production plan with what actually happens on the shop floor. It tracks orders through operations, records who worked and for how long, shows downtime and tells you where each job stands. Between the business system, where orders and invoices are created, and the shop floor itself, MES is the layer that answers “what is being made right now and how is it going”.

Why large MES systems are hard for a workshop

Traditional MES systems are built for factories with hundreds of workers, connected machines and a dedicated IT team. Setup takes months, requires consultants and customisation, and the cost of licences and implementation easily exceeds a small business budget. In a workshop of ten to fifty people most of those capabilities go unused, and the team drifts back to paper because the system is too complex for daily work.

Which part of MES you really need

For most small and medium manufacturers the core of MES comes down to three things: every order has clear operations and a deadline, you know who worked on what and for how long, and the office can see the status without walking the floor. Automatic data collection from machines and integrations with large ERP systems are useful only once this basic flow works and you have enough machines to justify them.

A good first step

Instead of a project that lasts months, start with one flow: purchase order, work order with operations and drawings, work records and dispatch. Once the team uses it every day, you have data on how long jobs really take, where they run late and how loaded people are. Only then is it easy to judge whether you need machines, materials or advanced analytics, and what they are worth.

Where NormaX fits

NormaX is not a traditional MES for large factories and does not connect directly to machines. It covers the part a workshop needs most: work orders with operations, drawings, planning and deadlines, work records and dispatch, on desktop, tablet and phone. We do setup and training at your premises free of charge, and the first month is free. You can see how it works in practice in two minutes with the “Try the demo” button.
